Sticking with Your New Year’s Goals in 2023

“To achieve your New Years’ goals the key is in the plan. Creating achievable, realistic, and tangible goals for yourself leads to success.”

“What could I have done better?” is something that is asked by many as the New Year begins. We create New Year’s Resolutions in order to start the year fresh with new habits and positive change in our lives. The challenge is rather not making the resolutions themselves but implementing them as a regular lifestyle change. The key to sticking with your resolutions is to create a plan with small changes that you can begin to implement slowly, instead making a big change suddenly. Everyone is hoping for that immediate end result, but the old saying holds true that “slow and steady wins the race”. So it all comes down to the question “What can you do to make this year your most successful year yet?”

The sudden, drastic changes can quickly become overwhelming.  If your goal is to incorporate more movement into your everyday life, find sneaky ways to add it in rather than spending three hours at the gym. Begin by walking more than usual – park your car in the back of the parking lot, take a short walk or climb a few stairs at your workplace, or go out for a short walk with a friend/pet. These small changes will add up quickly.

A few key things to keep in mind when you’re thinking about goals to set for yourself in this new year:

1. Keep it Simple

We applaud those who can create long lists of resolutions that are inspiring to all, but that may not be what is best for yourself. Take the time to think about what is truly important to you and pick out one or two of them, not 20. When you choose that one thing, make sure that it’s specific, direct, detailed and meaningful.

2. Make an Achievable Plan

Create deadlines or a timeline for yourself to accomplish this. If you lay out how you’re going to accomplish it, failure shouldn’t be possible. Ensuring that it’s measurable is important, make sure that your goal is quantifiable to track progress or success.

3. Stay Positive

Throughout the year there may be moments when you lose sight of the “why” or “end goal” and that is okay. Take a few steps back, re-evaluate, and keep going. Don’t sell your progress short and keep your chin up, because self-doubt should never win.

4. Reward Yourself

Don’t stop when you hit your goal, keep challenging yourself to be better. Complacency should never be a place where you feel comfortable so reward yourself for hitting your goal and keep on going.

At Senior Living Communities, wellness is at the core of who we are and what we do. We believe that anyone, at any age, in any condition can improve the quality of their life. Start fresh this year!
